Last Thursday night I finally saw Far From Heaven which I've owned since the beginning of May. It is an original movie paying its respects to the great classic, All That Heaven Allows with enough differences in the story so that it is isn't a remake. Dennis Haysbert (President Palmer on FOX's 24) plays a much better other man and Dennis Quaid gives a great performance. But Julianna Moore steals the movie. The lighting mimics that in All That Heaven Allows and other subtle details, such as the characters' costumes and the settings pay resepcts to the classic. Overall A.

Thursday night I saw Soul Plane. I am not going to waste space writing about it. F.

Last night I saw The Day After Tomorrow which was a conventional disaster movie, predictable and cheesy. The special effects, for the most part, were actually better than I thought, I especially liked the tornadoes ripping up L.A.. The movie was better than I thought it would be, but still nothing to brag about. Jake Gyllenhaal isn't believable as a 17 year-old, but his character could have been annoying if it were played by someone else. Dennis Quaid has an old school Harrison Ford thing going on, which actually helps his character. The thing that disappointed me the most about the movie was how all the male characters were the heroes while the females were reduced to cheering them on or crying from the disaster. It's only worth seeing to see the special effects on the big screen with the dolby sound, other than that you're not missing much. C+.

May. 24th, 2004 @ 10:01 pm Troy and Shrek 2
Current Mood: cheerful
So last week I saw Troy with Jason which was disappointing to say the least. It was headshot after headshot of Brad Pitt, mixed with repetitive boring, first-take shots and laugh-out-loud bad acting from Orlando Bloom. It had great potential, but the post-production ruined it. Overall C.

Today I saw Shrek 2 and it was hilarious. It took a while to get started, but once Puss in boots gets on board things begin to roll out smoothly. The last 45 to thirty minutes are especially hilarious, with some things you can't believe they put in there. Plus the little ditty after the beginning of the credits was a nice surprise at the end. I probably liked the sequel more than the first one. Overall A-

Van Helsing was even more horrible than I imagined!
The script sounded like it was written by a high school student with total disregard to the histories of all the legendary monsters. Plus the dialogue was just so horrid, example:
"I've never seen the sea before." *pause* "It must be beautiful." *teary eyes*
Speaking of sound, what was with the loud music all the time? Totally ripping off how Pirates of the Caribbean had a theme, only the music fit in that movie.
Speaking of ripping off movies, what's with the people in the clouds at the end, a la The Lion King? Or the gap in the bridge like Speed, or swinging like Spiderman, becoming a wolf sort which reminds us of X-men, baby dracula bats like creatures in Aliens, the list goes on...

Jan. 17th, 2004 @ 12:20 am Why I Never Want to Have Children
For dinner we had chinese food. My fortune cookie states:
People find it difficult to resist you
ok, so i lied, here's the rest:
r persuasive manner.
How is that a fortune? It's more or less a statement trying to appear as a fact.
I guess that's what you get with mass produced fortunes. *shrug*

So Leslie and I saw Big Fish tonight and it was nice to finally see a movie that made me want to cry out of happiness instead of pure depression. It was so majestic and grand and perfect. I loved it a lot. I really can't explain it right now other than with these somewhat vague terms that can partially capture the great feeling it left in me.

Now for the first twenty minutes every time the scene changed some little child would ask, "Where's he going?" "What's he doing?" "Look a big fish" which really annoyed the hell out of me. It reminded me of the time when Leslie and I saw Spiderman and there was some little kid who kept asking his grandfather or whomever, "Is that spiderman?" "Where's spiderman?" "Is he spiderman?" Back to Big Fish the scene where Edward and Sandra are in the water filled bathtub completely dressed. It is completely quiet in the theater and the aforementioned child says, "Grandma, they're going to take off their clothes now!" Oh. My. God. I couldn't really believe I heard that, and Leslie and I cracked up for like five minutes. Despite the poor viewing experience, the movie still shined.
